Tiger Woods opened with a 7-under 65 to take the lead in the Chevron World Challenge on Thursday, only the second time all year his name was atop the standings.
In one of his most complete series of the year, Woods missed only two greens and putts for eagle four times for a one-stroke lead over U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy.
Woods all the way to 18 holes before an old bug crept into his swing again. It emerges his tee shot, forcing him to pitch from behind a tree and two-putt from 50 feet to escape with bogey.
However, he matched his best score this year and has been atop the standings for only the second time in his difficult season.
About the only club that has not cooperated with his new putter, but there is nothing new. If something has kept Woods back at least some chance of being worth, it does not make much of putts. Large iron game is that, at Sherwood Country Club.
