Texas Longhorns sophomore wide receiver Cayleb Jones has elected to transfer.
According to the Associated Press, Jones was released by the Longhorns on Thursday five months after he allegedly punched a university tennis player, breaking his jaw in the process. Texas coach Mack Brown said he was given an unconditional release.
Jones' charge of felony aggravated assault stems from a reported altercation involving him, his ex-girlfriend and a male friend. The charge was reduced to a misdemeanor.
He was reinstated into the Longhorns lineup but missed the opener against New Mexico State as a discipinary measure.
Jones' father, Robert, said it would be best for his son to transfer for a fresh start. He didn't go into specifics as to what school Cayleb will be attending next.
His statement was featured on the Longhorns' SB Nation website.
"We want to thank coach Brown, coach Wyatt and all of the staff for everything they've done for Cayleb and our family. We really enjoyed being a part of the Texas program, but we've talked about the situation as a family, and we think it's best for Cayleb to get a fresh start and transfer to another school. We know he will miss his teammates and playing for the Longhorns, but we believe this move is in his best interest."
The 6'3", 200-lb. Jones recorded just two receptions and 35 receiving yards with no touchdowns as a backup wide receiver in the 2012 NCAA season. He also added 10 rushing yards, per ESPN stats.
